NORTH SHORE DESTRUCTOR.
SUGGESTED ABANDONMENT.
ATTITUDE OF TAKAPUNA.
The possibility of the abandonment of the North Shore destructor tioned at last night s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council. In a report submitted by the Mayor Mr. J. Guiniven, it was pointed out that the contract for the collection ol the refuse of the borough would shortly expire, and it would be advisable to decide upon a policy for the future. Mr. Guiniven said it would be wise to abandon the use of the destructor, as property owners in the area nad successfully applied for reductions m valuations on account of the detrimental effects of the plant. The loss ol rates entailed was quite serious, but the suggested structural alterations to the destructor as proposed by the medical officer of health would cost over £1000, and that big expenditure was not warranted. The acting-engineer, Mr. J. D. Bodle, tabled a report upon a suggestion that refuse be buried on a dump situated m Waitemata County. He said that c\en allowing for a capital expenditure of £200 for roading, etc., it would be possible to effect a considerable saving by abandoning the destructor. Mr. Colegrove: Assuming that both Northcote and Takapuna resolve to withdraw from partnership in the plant, and that Devonport declines to do so, what will then be the legal position? The Mayor: We must be guided by the advice of the borough solicitor. It was decided to obtain a legal opinion.
