LEAGUE FOOTBALL

CAUTION RULE DISAPPROVED.

, FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY.

Last evening the Auckland Rugby League had its attention drawn to the recent ruling requiring, in accordance with English laws of the came, that a player should receive a warning from a referee before being ordered off the field. On behalf of the Referees' Association, Messrs. r gull and A. McCowatt said the ruling had created dissatisfaction. It was considered that players were wholly under the iurisdiction of the referees acting on behalf of the League, and if the latest ruling vras maintained the standing of the officials was prejudiced. They quoted instances of the effect of the ruling. Mr. McCowatt said some players in the lower m-ades had already showed a disposition fo demand a right to be cautioned, and the speaker hoped the League would reconsider the matter and restore the power and prestige of the officials in charge of tie game. The chairman, in thanking the deputation, assured it that the ruling was based purely on the laws of the game, and it was realised that something would have to be done iby way of a local by-law. The junior management's resolution asking for delegates or club representatives to be heard in all cases befqre the judicial committee made its findings was unanimously rejected as being contrary to the constitution of the League. Replying to a suggestion from EllerslieOtahuhu United asking for the retention of Jlangere players pending a conference in September, it was decided that Mangere Club's petition for release be granted, Ellerslie to liave the right to veto any Mangere Club transfers to other clubs this season. It was decided to advise the Northland League that Carlaw Park would not be available for a Northern Union Cup challenge fixture against South Aucklnd before August 15, and the date of its availabilicy for such a contest would be further considered. Mr. Max Jaffe advised that, as an old supporter of the Leeds Club (England), and as an Auckland resident pleased with the progress of the code this season, he was presenting a silver cup. He suggested that it might be given to the most sportsmanlike club or allocated as the League thought best. Mr. Ivan Culpan said a suggestion had been made to utilise the trophy for a special charity fixture, but it -R-as decided to defer the matter, and in the meantime thank the donor.
