MR. SAMUEL BLACKBURN.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. The death of Mr. Samuel Blackburn, at the age of 83 years, severs one of the closest links with the associations of the old travelling days in North Auckland. For 44 years the accommodation house which he conducted with his wife near the branch off the road to Waipu, Oakleigh and Mangapai was known to all those who used the highways and tracks of the north. To such good food and a night's lodging were essential and Mangapai was a convenient half-way point between Whangarei and the centres to the south. Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn were a fine type of host and hostess and their kindly attention cheered many a wayfarer. A large number of settlers from a widely scattered field attended to pay their last respects at the graveside at Mangapai yesterday.
