LOCAL BODIES.

OTAHUHU COUNCIL. The Otahuliu Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, I presiding. Building Permit—An application to erect a 3-roomed dwelling in lieu of an old building condemned *by the health authorities was refused. The building in question was one of the Public Works Department cottages. The inspector reported that that class of building did not comply with the borough by-laws.

Refuse Receptacles—An application for permission to instal refuse receptacles in the main streets was referred to the works committee. The conditions of installation were that the company concerned has the right to advertise on the sliding panels of the receptacles. Rest Room. —A letter was received from the Women's Christian Temperance Union pointing out that there was a lack of suitable accommodation and conveniences for women, and suggesting the council should make provision for a rest room for women and children. The works committee will make investigations.

Grant.—A grant of £2 2/ was made to St. Mary's Home. Some of the councillors thought more should be done, but the Mayor pointed out that in the past the home was exempt from rates, and a special allowance was made on the water rate.

Chlorination Plant.—Advice was received that this plant was due to arrive on July 13, and no time would be lost in installing it.

No. 5 Scheme.—Advice was received that only £250 would be available to the council from July 6. This means that all single men must be put off, and nine mairrieJ men. In all, 126 men will be employed, which means over 90 single men will be discharged.

Wages "Cut."—Mr t F. W. Grey made an effort to have the council rescind its previous decision to reduce the wages of all borough employees by 5 per cent, but that quarry be reduced 10 per cent. Mr. Grey said the " cut " should be uniform. Quarry work was dangerous, aiid the workers are only getting 9/ per week more than the other borough workers. Quarry workmen lost time, while provision was made for the others. Messrs. Parsons and Graliame supported the motion, and Mr. J. Hunter and Mr. J. Trenwith opposed it. It was defeated by 5 votes to 4.
