MARKETS AND IMPORTS.
The following figures extracted from "Textile Argus : and Mercury," Bradford, are of interest:—At the ordinary meeting of Messrs. William Collins and Company, Ltd.. Sir Ernest Jardine presiding, the following comparisons relating to national taxation per head as illustrating the impossibility of competing with the foreign competition were quoted: Taxation, Great Britain 100, France 04, Germany 50, Belgium 38, Italy 30; social service '(unemployment, health, workers' compensation, old age pensions, .poor relief), 100, 17, 4S, 7, 4; wages, 100, 58, 73./' 39. Taking the average for five pre-war years as 100 for exports of. all descriptions of cotton piece goods from the United Kingdom, in 1930 only 37.4 were exported. Woollen and worsted piece goods were in 1930 only 68.7 of the average of the three previous years, while the imports were 95.5 of the average of the three previous years. The machinations of Mr. Gandiii and the fall in silver affected the India and China trade. EXPORT. .
