MINERS' REFUSAL TO PAY.
UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY. ATTITUDE ON WEST COAST. One reason given by the miners on the West Coast for their refusal to pay the. unemployment lew is, according to the "Grey mouth Star'," that they "are not eligible for relief under the No. 5 scheme if the mines are working short time, and they stand to receive no advantage from the payment of the levy. When the local bodies were subsidised by the Government £1 for £1 for relief works many miners obtained employment when the mines were working short time.at 14/ a day, stated one of their representatives; but under the No. 5 scheme that advantage had been withdrawn. Another ground of objection is that the miners contend the companies 'have done nothing to pass on the benefits of the 10 per cent reduction in wages. Referring to the State mine, a prominent Grevniouth miner said that the price of the coal was 32/0, and if a reduction of 10 per cent were made in the price there would be no need to import the Newcastle coal, which was costing 30/ J a ton. i :■' . i I I
