WINTER BOWLING.

GREENS FULLY EMPLOYED. MATCHES AND TOURNAMENTS. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MATCH. (By TRUNDLER.) A strong westerly wind did not improve matters on Saturday, but fortunately it had dried up the greens fairly well, and there was only one sharp shower during the afternoon, so' all the games were completed. An ingenious manoeuvre was adopted by the Onehunga greenkeeper, Mr. J. Preston, to minimise the inconvenience caused by the shower, which everybody could see looming up for half an hour.. Keeping his weather eye on the western horizon, he , nicely timed. the boiling of the kettle, and rang the bell just as the first drops fell. The whole 96 players made a bolt for the pavilion, leaving all the heads as they were, and by the time the afternoon tea, was over, the rain was over also. After holding the Denison Pins for three remarkable games that were like the Scotchman's change, only just, the Mount Eden holders lost them to Dominion Road by a substantial margin, and the latter will now have to defend them against S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro'), followed by J. Wright (Epsom). The Jordan Pins are providing plenty of interest at present, for they have changed hands at every match this year. Aβ the Te Papapa green is closed at present, the new holders proposed to defend the trophies on the Onehunga green, and the challengers will be W. H. Pinhey, G. W. Venables, S. E. Harper, J Gardiner (Otahuhu), followed by P. Norris (St. Helier's) and R. Sheppard (Hilleboro , ). _ „ , The Edwin Stars were successfully defended against a challenge from Auckland, after low and close scoring, and next Saturday the Onehunga holders will meet a challenge from Grey Lynn. The personnel has not been disclosed, but it is understood that the team will be-F. J. Baildon, W. Mincham, W. Liver6id<re, H. Whittle. They will be followed by B. Burrows (Waitemata), O. E. Bridges (Ponsonby) and W. F. Hardley (West End). The local club challenges are providin", a good deal of interest again this winter, about half a dozen clubs having a series very similar to the three mentioned, except that they are all played on the club's own green, and usually open only to club members. Two King's Birthday finals were played on Saturday, Keatley (Rocky Nook) winning at Onehunga, and ParkerHill (Papatoetoe) at Carlton. The final of last Wednesday's pairs tournament at Mount Albert was also played on Saturday, and resulted inawin for A. Parsons and R. S. Higgynbotham (Ponsonby). TJie former Henderson champion is lucky in again having such a lead. Grey Lynn will hold a rink tournament on July 4 and 11. Ponsonby has filed Wednesday, July 8, for a pairs are reminded of the.annual meeting of the Auckland Centre this evening.

Business Men at Bowls. The meeting of the bowling members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce with the Onehunga Chamber of Commerce turned out a very enjoyable function on Saturday. Unfortunately, a few of those who intended to play had found it necessary to be out of town on the dav, and others were caught with tfle prevailing colds, but six rinks made quite a good match, and several expressed the opinion that the meeting should be an annual event. It was rather fortunate that the suburban chamber won, both in games and in aggregate score, for this will probably induce the city magnates to muster m stronger force next time, in an endeavour to turn the tables on the smaller body. It seems to be generally agreed that the meeting next time should be in the summer, and on a Wednesday, but it ■may be pointed out that this project was originally planned for the summer, and it was only due to unavoidable delays and postponements that it came off on such a' cold day. However, it might have been worse, for, as it eventually turned out, the first match between two chambers of commerce m New Zealand happened to synchronise with, the first Test played in England against a New Zealand cricket team. The visitors were welcomed by the local club president, Mr. I. J. Sutherland, who stressed the significance of city business men meeting suburban business men under such enjoyable conditions. He could not play against them himself, ae he was engaged in the Edwin Stars, but the official team contained members of the council of the Onehunga chamber, and they were opposed by four former club presidents. As the president of the Auckland chamber is not yet a bowler, the skip of this team was the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association. Mr. Sutherland therefore invited him to reply for the visitors, and Mr. James Pascoe responded in hie usual graceful fashion, complimenting the Onehunga chamber on initiating sucli an interesting contest.

The Australian Bowling Carnival. ; The response io the invitation to take part in the next Australian carnival, to commence, in Brisbane on August 24, must be regarded as quite satisfactory, for 28 players have nominated, comprising 20 from Auckland, four from Wellington, and four from. Christchurch. It seems rather a pity, however, that the project was not taken up more enthusiastically by the authorities in Dunedin, for they have just as good players there, or they always say they have, and another four might have enabled a, stronger team to be selected for the Test, which will probably be a six-rink match. However, there will not be the slightest difficulty in selecting four very strong rinks for the inter.State championship.

The New Zealand entries were to close with the Dominion secretary on June 1, in order to allow full time to make arrangements for the tour, and there will be general satiefaction with the appointment of Mr. James Pascoe as president of the party, and Mn J. W. Hardley as manager. There seems to be no reason, however, why further entries should not be accepted, now that the.tour is. definitely fixed, for tho entries only close finally in Brisbane on July 11. The present intention ia for the "main body" to leave for Sydney by the Niagara on August 11, but the Wellington and Christchurch members will probably leave Wellington by the Ulimaroa on the previous Friday. After resting a day or two in. Sydney, with no play, the -whole party will push off for Brisbane, in order to try out a few greens before the official matches start,° on the following Monday, and also to select the teams. It is understood that 14 ladies will accompany the 28 players;' Mr. ' A. J. ' Parker and family, and also Mr, H. S. HHI and

family left by the Ulimaroa last Friday, and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Hardley propose to leave by the Marama this .week, accompanied by Mr. W. J. H. Thomass. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, a former Mayor of Wellington, and a paet-president of the Victoria Club, has now recovered sufficiently from his illness to take a holiday trip to England, and will leave very shortly. Mr. W.,' Mack, , yyho is .also a pastpresident of Victoria Club, is at present in Auckland, and will be a welcome guest at any club he cares to visit. CLUB GAMES. EDENDALE GREEN.
