SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Otahuhu Volunteer Fire Brigade held the first of a Series of dances in the Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, last Saturday night. An enjoyable time was spent by the dancers, and it Is proposed to hold the next dance in the middle of July in the Kingsford Hall. The music was eupplied by Miss Marjorie Seel, Messrs. M. Seel, H. Halstead and Smythe, while extras were played' by Mrs. G. Viney and H. J. Levy. Supper was served by the brigade's social club committee, A concert was held in Taupiri on Wednesday evening under the auspices of the Women's Institute. The hall was filled by an appreciative audience. The orchestra, consisting of 16 instruments, played, and items , were given by Betty Mara, Motelli Monteith, Ida Martin, Molly Moore and Joyce Hoyle, C. and G. Mrs. H. W. Sly resulted in. Miss,-P., Edney and Master Dduglas Franks being awarded the prizes. A silhouette competition was won by Miss Edna Basley and Mise Smith, whowere equal. During the evening a pianoforte solo was contributed by Miss A. Willerton and a song by Mies Hilary Wood. The accompanists for the competitions were Miss I. Smytheman and Miss Z.: Ebseveare. Phillips, of Cumberland Avenue, Westmere, West Lynn, gave a luncheon, party on Friday, in honour of her mother, Mrs. M. Knight, late of WMtford, who celebrated her 80th birthday. The guest of honour, who wore a black duchess satin gown, has been in the Dominion for over 70 years. A wealth of flowers adorned the living and dining rooms. The birthday cake, which occupied the centre of the luncheon table, was lighted, with 80candles, and a side buffet was filled •with, many presents and congratulatory telegrams from all parts of New Zealand. The 'ihostess wore a rose woollen crepe de chine. Mrs. Knight's youngest sister, Mrs. McClure, was among the relatives present, .. • » * * The annual meeting of tie Auckland Croquet Club was held at the clubroom of the Auckland Bowling Club last week, when Mrs. J. Mrs. McEwen is shortly going to live in Cambridge, and a large gathering of friends attended the function as a mark of the esteem to the guest. Mrs. Downs, Mrs. Eoy Williams and Mrs. A. M. Eyburn' acted as hostesses. Musical numbers, both vocal and instrumental, were contributed' by Mrs. H. A. Washer, Mrs. Webster and Miss D. Heerdegen. Competitions were enjoyed. Mrs. Eyburn presented to Mrs. McEwen, on behalf of those present, .a handsome flower bowl, at the same time expressing the genuine regret felt at her departure from Te Puke. The recipient suitably responded. Mrs. McEwen will be missed by the local swimming club next season, as she was the lady champion eprint swimmer and springboard diver. 4 * * * An excellent programme and dancing made an enjoya'ble gathering at the Philistine's Club on Saturday evening. A successful bridge party in aid of the 'new Parish Hall of St. Philip's Church, St. Helier's Bay, was given at the residence of Mrs. Metcalfe, Main Road, St. Helier's Bay, on Wednesday evening. The lounge and drawing room ■were cosily arranged with large,, glowing log fires, winter flowers, and , shaded golden lights. The hostess received the guests in a pastel green satin beaute and em'bossed bridge coat. Prizes were won by Mrs. J. Neville and Miss Bakewell. Among those present were: Mesdames JDerrick, R. St. Jude's Hall, Avondale, was prettily decorated in lemon and pale blue streamers, with large balloons hanging from "each, corner of the. room, on Saturday evening, for the 21st birthday dance of Miss Addie, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Morrish, Princes Street, Avondale. About forty couples were present and an enjoyable evening was spent in dancing and competitions. The toast of Miss Morrish was given by a very old friend of the family, Mr. C. Harris, and was responded to by Mr. A. J. Morrish. Mr. H: A. V. Bollard proposed the health of the parents. Mrs. J. W. Bailey took a concert party to Mount Eden gaol on Saturday afternoon, and the women of the institution were entertained with a two hours' programme of songs, duets, sketches and monologues. Those who contributed items were: Madame Stewart, Misses Alice Moncur, Gladys Barton, Rhona Speed, Florence McKiiin, Phyllis Hawley, Yvonne Carter and Mrs. J. W. Bailey. A few words of appreciation were expressed by one of the inmates, and the matron then dispensed afternoon tea to tli e performers. * * » * The presentation of a flag to the Tirau Girl Guides took place recently in the Tirau Hall, in the presence of a large number of parents and friends. In making the presentation Commissioner Dobson urged the girls to be true to all that the flag stood for. The name of the donor of the flag was not disclosed. The dedication. of the colours took place in the church in the presence of a large number of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. The Rev. E. H. Atkey preached an appropriate sermon. * * ■» ' ♦ The Hemingway students entertained over a hundred of their friends at an enjoyable party in the classrooms on Friday evening. The;rooms were gaily decorated with multi-coloured streamers and the dancers looked very gay in caps and novelty ruffles. The students presented Miss Parkinson (their principal), and Miss Ferguson each with a beautiful bouquet as tokens of their esteem. A jolly evening was spent in novelty games and dancing, and Mies Rosie Kennedy gave a delightful rendering of several Maori songs. Several dance numbers were played by Mr. Fred. Woods, Miss May Brae, Mr. Trevor Mitchell, Mr. Geoffrey Colledge and Mis 3 Thora Adams. Prizes were won by Miss Barry arid Mr. Cochrane, Miss Beale and partner, and Mr. and Miss Chapman.

The League of Pen women listened on Tuesday evening to.Miss Rankine Johnston's address on Scottish music. Illustrations were provided by Misses Renee Satchwell and Mavis Hewson (piano solos), Ida Walker and Amy Hansard (songs), and Isobel Langlands (violin). On Friday an address on Maori music was given by .Miss Gertrude Bertram, who described the Maori ae a true creative artist in music, translating every incident into song, to be sung round the camp fire. She described various musical instruments, and mentioned that the flute which wooed Hinemoa across the lake is now in the Auckland Museum. Miss Bertram's address was illustrated with songs by Mrs. Harold King, "Waiata Aroha," "Waiata Poi," "Hinemoa" and "May I Not Love?" Piano solos, "Prelude" and "Scherzo," were played by Miss' Hewson; Mrs.' Colhoun sang "Wild Rose".and "Cradle Song"; Miss Amy Stevenson's viola soli were "Humor - esque" and "Le Cygne"; Mrs. CarteLloyd contributed two humorous sketches; and Miss Doris Messer recited "Some Proposals" and "Definitions of Loye." ' Mrs. Victor Macky presided, and presented a bouquet to the guest of honour, the Mayoress, Mrs. G. W.
