Mr. Forbes and his Ministers are to-be . congratulated for their foresight in protect", ing this country against what appears to have been a sinister move on the part of the coal - unions in New Zealand. I refer to the action of about seventy-five per cent of the coal miners here in not' mining coal for the Govern-. ment when the orders had been actually ; placed. The statement made by the Minister of Railways clearly shows that the mines were supplying the Department with about . half the quantity actually ordered. Apparently concerted action was taken by the miners, who, as all know, are protected by unions, to embarrass the Government and hold up the industries of this country. It is a. great pity that in cases such as these unions' cannot be deregistered. The public and coun- • try would be better-off if this were done and many of these "rings" broken up. a JOHN CIT,
