MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
"Ratepayer," in his remarks under tile above heading, appearing in your columns in Tuesday's "Star," says the ratepayers will n need substantial proof of economy before '■* voting in favour of the proposal to form". Mount Eden into a Fire Board district. As the brigade is controlled at present, the rate- :« payers of the borough have to pay every > penny for the upkeep and working of the brigade, which amounts to about £1000 per ' annum. If the brigade was under the control of a Fire Board the insurance companies would be compelled to contribute one-half of the annual expenditure, and it would also receive-: a sum of £100 per annum from the Consolidated Fund. If. "Ratepayer" wants furthers ■ substantial proof let him read the Fire Brigade Act, 192G, which was passed to assist local bodies to finance their brigades economically, v' and I cannot understand why the Mount Edeir ; ■ Borough did not take advantage of this Act years ago.
