SLY GROG SALES
MAN AND WOMAN CONVICTED. DEAL WITH A POLICEMAN. A plain clothes policeman recently told Hilda Wainui and Charles McCoy that he wanted to buy beer for a party. They sold him six bottles, and lie went his way. This morning the' same six bottles were shown to Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court as evidence during the hearing of charges of sly grog selling against Wainui and McCoy. ■ Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared for accused. The woman, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and discharged; the man was fined £10. and costs. Sergeant Daly said he searched the house on April 4 and found a number of men and women in the kitchen and in a bedroom. There was a lot of liquor round the place., . . .-'.... "I sliQuld not say there was much profit in selling beer like that by the bottle," said Mr. Hunt. "They might make, something, if they sold it by the nip." Mr. Sullivan said the accused had now gone to the country. "The best place for them," said the magistrate. "The next time you come up McCoy you will go to gaol. There is a man doing, three months for this kind of thing now."
