RADIO SHOW OPENS.

CONCERT HALL CROWDED.

FUTURE OF BROADCASTING

POSTMASTER -GENERAL'S HINT

Pne concert chamber seemed all toe small to accommodate the crowd which attended the opening of the Radio Exhibition last evening. The gallery was packed, and there was standing room, but not moving room, on the main floor, j when Mr. C. A. Tucker, president of the I Auckland Radio Dealers" Association, welcomed the gathering, and explained that rhe exhibition was the result or co-operation between his body and the j Broadcasting Company. They reprei sented a trade which to-day 'wa. an ! important factor in combating the I mental effects of depressing times. He j outlined the objects and features of the show. In officially opening the exhibition, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. J. B. Donald, congratulated the dealers upon the excellent display, and also upon the great public interest they had aroused. As Postmaster-General he was pleased at the continued growth of interest in New Zealand radio, and hoped in the near future to see every home with a radio set. It was his ambition to bring a good broadcasting service to the home of everyone. He felt it would not be long before facilities would be so extended I that radio would penetrate the most disj tant backbloeks. so that every remote j farm would have its set, and that thus, j through broadcasting, some of the j amenities of city life would be brought i to the man on the land, making condijt.'oii- there more attractive for him. I Mr. Donald indicated that changes i would have to come, and that when the ; new scheme for New Zealand broadcast- ! ing yas launched both the dealers and I f he listeners would have a direct interest

. Hi tne working of it. Mr. G. y.-. Hutchison. Mayor of AuckI land, and Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, chairj man of the Auckland Power Board, also [addressed the gathering and the microj phone, both stressing the influence for h'tace that radio was developing, while I Mr. HoMsworth declared that to the j radio industry at least could not be laid the charge of being one which displaced ! men from employment. Both speakers J congratulated organisers and audience on j the excellence of the show. fhe speeches were followed by a demonstration of the ordinary routine r>t broadcasting a studio programme. faithfully carried out in almost all of its details, and. in its musical section, thoroughly enjoyed by a packed gallery. There was soon opportunity for the crowd to move round the different stalls, to evince keen ir.tero.-t in the many new j model- displayed, and to ply stallholders with pertinent questions or devour technical literature upon receiving sets. The stall of that body of enthusiasts. the Xew Zealand Amateur Transmitters' Association, was thronged by hundreds who wished to send radio greetings to friends all over the world. Not a" few of these messages last night went to Xew Zealand cricketers in "London. It would be many hours after the ordinary bedtime when these keen amateur operators cleared the accumulation of message? that poured in on them. the latest model of a machine for projecting talkies was an object of keen investigation. In the supper room a film illustrative of the wide range of broadcasting and ail the details of manufacturing a modern set, was shown for the first time under difficulties which will be overcome to-dav. A commendable feature of this year's radio exhibition is the excellent system | of illumination, which enables the "many lines of exhibits to be displayed to the best advantage in artistically-equipped stalls. These, though not extensive, are I ■ certainly attractive. The exhibition will be open from 10.30 a.m. daily until Sat-' urday night. A musical programme even better than that of last night has been arranged for this evening. \
