Government service for nearly 30 years.' . , ... ■ . • Before coming to New Zealand Captain Atwood was for a number.of years in the employ of the Chinese Navigation.Company. He joined, the New Zealand Government, service in 1904, and three years later was" transferred from the South to Auckland. Between tliat time and the time of his appointment to the position of superintendent in November, 1921, he was examiner of ; masters and mates, surveyor of ships, and, assistant superintendent. Previous to this he was in the Government steamer Hiiiemoa, which- is still afloat after more than 50 years' service, and he went to England to superintend the building of, and to bring out. to New Zealand the Government steam yacht Janie Seddon, a sister ehip to the* Lady Roberts, which for years was stationed at Auckland. : ■ Two. other officers of the Marine Department, Mr. J,. Kydd, chief inspector 6f machinery and surveyor of ships, and Mr. .W. ' Carson,' surveyor of ; ships, retired last week. A native of Scotland, Mr. Kydd, was at one time, an engineer for the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. Hβ joined-the Government service 25 years ago, and at various times was stationed 'at Wellington, Napier and Hamilton. He was t.'Ansferred to Auckland in 1920, and was chief surveyor .two. years later. •Mr. Carson was born in Dunedin, and his first sea service was with.the Union Steamship Company. He was in the Wairarapa as third engineer when that ship was ; lost with great loss of life on the Great Barrier. Later Mr. Carson was on the staff; of the Portland Cement Company. He joined the Government service 13 years ago.
