BOTANIC GARDEN.
The suggestion from the city engineer that the area allocated for a botanic garden site in 1929 was unsuitable for that purpose will come as a distinct shock and setback to horticulturists. The source of this sudden "volte face" is hard to understand and can only be assumed to be an excuse for not taking any action, even under the No. 5 scheme. The site was approved of by Dr. Sir A. W. Hill, the director of Kew Gardens, and by several wellknown parks superintendents and other horticulturists in 1929. There has never 'been any suggestion that this particular area should be devoted solely to native flora. N. R. W. THOMAS, Hon. Secretary, Auckland District Council, New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.
