CHILD WELFARE.
Your correspondent "Fair Play" i<, seemingly overwhelmed with that superior kind of bogy spoken of as "lack of parental control," which, in my opinion, further emphasises the necessity for an urgent general inquiry into the workings of this Act. I am aware that reports are eent from the schools to the Departmental officials; also that officials visit, the schools to interrogate the children. This also requires inquiry. If a child goes wrong in its own home it is said to be due to "lack of parental control" and the child is then nationalised. Does no other way for the real betterment of the children and the parents suggest itself to your many readers? When a child goes wrong while in the care of the State, ■boarded out or otherwise, it is then classed as being incorrigible. Why this distinction, and what has -been gained, and what may have been lost? COMMON SENSE WITH SENTIMENT.
