RECENT 'QUAKE DAMAGE.
MANY CHIMNEYS DOWN, (Bv Telesraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, Thursday. The _ earthquake that shook the Hawke's.Bay district yesterday was extremely severe at Patoka, 27 miles north-west of Kapler, while Puketitiri, :r ; mjles from Napier, and Rissington! 16 miles distant, received an alarming shaking. So severe was the shake in Patoka that some residents said it was the worst they had experienced. Certainly in s<|ue cases far greater damage in the way of breakages of household property occurred than was the case previously. Nearly all the new chimneys were shaken down or damaged. Some escaped destruction, and this was mainly due to the fact that, when they were rebuilt, great precautions were taken to see that they were free to rock apart from the house. In Rissington some houses were damaged. Some workmen, who were applying the final touches to a chimney, saw it crumble to pieces before them. Between 11.7 a.m. and 1 p.m. there was a continuous series of shakes, ranging from faint quivers to severe jolts. A further severe shake was felt in the same district, and at Waikari, 35 miles north, of Napier, at 11.J5 a.m. •to-day.. ; , ....
