THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.

Plant out Cabbage, Cauliflowers and Lettuce. Sowings of Spinach can be made. A well manured soil is required. Make sowings of Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, Radish and Beetroot. The system of using raised beds for winter work gives good results. During winter seed should be sown much more shallow than in summer. Stir the soil around seedling crops and protect seeds from birds, etc. One or two strands of black cotton stretched about two inches above the soil is the best bird scarer. Leeks should be earthed up as they advance in growth, the blanching being gradually done as they grow. Celery should be full grown before earthing up and is ready to use about a fortnight or three weeks after earthing. Break up ground for early Peas or Potatoes. Sow a cover or soiling crop, such as Oats, on all vacant ground. Potato sets should be stood in boxes and allowed full light. Place the sets with the "rose" end upwards. This will produce strong, dark green shoots.
