CITY MAYORALTY
MR. HUTCHISON* AT NEWTON. Keen interest in local politics was shown by the audience at the Epiphany Hill, Newton, last evening, where Mr. G. W. Hutchison, candidate for the Mayoralty, addressed the electors. The meeting was presided over by Mr. M. J. Bennett. A good deal of time was taken up with questions. Ou the subject of the 10 per cent "cut," Mr. Hutchison said he believed it was necessary in salaries, but he was firmly of opinion that it should not operate upon salaries of £200 a year or under. He thought promotions should proceed as heretofore, the increases to be subject to the 10 per cent cut. No salary should fall below £200 owing to the cut. A vote of thanks nnol confidence, moved by Mr. W. H. Fortune, was carried.
