CHURCH FAILS.
Raising of Funds for Hospitals in Sydney. STATE LOTTERY ALTERNATIVE. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The time allotted to the churches for raising £250,000 for the hospitals in preference to a State lottery expires shortly. It was obviouo from the discussion at a meeting of the Congregational Union that the collectors had failed and a tax is suggested as an alternative.
The Council of Churches of New South Wales in December accepted a challenge to offer an alternative scheme to a State lottery for the raising of funds for hospitals. Mr. Lang promised a deputation from the council to withhold legislation on the subject if the churches could raise the required arrtount by a direct appeal to the people. The Church announced that the figure asked for wa«s £500,000, and that should they fail a State lottery would certainly be established.
