BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Mc- ' Phail, presiding. No Funds for Post Office. —The Post-master-General wrote that, owing to the financial position, and the_ heavy strain thrown on the Department's building fund by the loss of its premises in Hawke's Bay, the erection of a new post office at Birkenhead could not be favourably considered at present. Electors' Koll. —The total number of names on the borough roll is 2297. Anzac Service.—Tne Mayor stated that the usual community Anzac service would be held at the Civic Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The principal speaker would be the Bev. Angus Macdonald. Perry Steamers.—lt was decided to bring under the notice of the Devonport Ferry Company the irregular running of the passenger ferry steamers. Sports Ground. —It was decided to develop the area opposite the reservoir for a sports ground, as an unemployment relief scheme. Harbour Bridge Bill. —Approval was given to the redrafted Auckland Harbour Bridge Empowering Bill, the legal adviser having reported that this effectively met the objections raised by the council. An amendment by Messrs. J. Kerruish and H. A. Campbell that consideration be deferred to a special meeting, was lost. The movers said that some members had not had any opportunity of perusing the draft, owing to the company not supplying the requisite number of copies. Last Meeting.—The Mayor thanked members for their assistance in carrying out the work of the borough. He hoped the policy of the council would be continued. When the "harbour bridge was completed Birkenhead would benefit by an increased measure of prosperity, and would be deemed a very desirable residential place. Messrs. W. B. Darlow, J. Kerruish and R. B. Hayman reciprocated the compliments paid to the work of the members by the Mayor.
