SEAMAN IN TROUBLE.
ASSAULTED gatekeeper.
THREW PAINT OVER UNIFORM.
Pleading guilty to charges of assaulting William Roberts and of committing mischief, by wilfully damaging Roberts' uniform to the extent of £7, Arthur Frederick Steele, a seaman, aged 39, •was remanded until to-morrow by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this- morning. Detective-Sergeant Kelly, who prosecuted, said that the wharf police received a message yesterday afternoon to the effect that the gatekeeper at the Central wharf had been assaulted. They found that the gatekeeper's uniform was covered with paint. Mr. Roberts told the police that he had accosted accused, who had thrown a tin of paint over him. Mr. K. C. Aekins, who represented accused, said that Steele was drunk all day yesterday and he was coming ashore when accosted by the gatekeeper. Accused, said counsel, did not remember anything of the incident. He had received head injuries during the war. His vessel had sailed yesterday for a Southern port. Mr. Kelly: It was a deliberate act. He went back to the boat to get the paint to throw over the gatekeeper. Mr. Hunt remanded accused until omorrow in-order to find out when his ship would 'leave New Zealand waters and how much money was owing to him.
