CHILD WELFARE.

Allegations of cruelty, etc., and maladministration of the Child Welfare Act have from time to time been made through the columns of the Press. The Minister of Education promised an investigation months ago. Up to the present the most the Minister has done has been to iefer complaints on to the superintendent at Wellington, Mr. Beck. The superintendent refers those complaints on to the officials concerned, who state their case to suit themselves, finally resulting in Mr. Atmore, the Minister of Education, advising the complainants that their complaints are unjustified. Mr. Atmore does not apparently know the difference between a '"please explain" and an inquiry. Let the National Council of Women, the Civic League, the women's branch of the Labour party and • kindred societies press for an inquiry, not an official "please explain." I would also suggest that electors ask their Parliamentary candidates to state just why an inquiry is not justified and the present state of affairs is allowed to continue under the misnomer of "Child Welfare."
