SCUFFLE IN SHOP.
CONSTABLE'S ALLEGATIONS. BREAKING AND ENTERING CHARGE Allegations that he had tried to strike a constable with a bag-hook wei e made in the Police Court this morning when Thomas Frank Carey, a labouiei, aged 41, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., on charges of breaking and entering a shop in Newmarket with intent to commit a crime and stealing a bottle of wine valued at 3/, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company. Mr. Moody appeared for Carey, and Detective-Sergeant Kelly prosecuted. Geoffrey Speedman, a labourer, said that about 10.25 p.m. on March 12, he was in Broadway. Newmarket, when hi;? attention was attracted to a man shaking the doors in Teed's chemist shop. Each time a passerby came along the man stood away. Eventually the man gave the door another push and it opened. Witness told a constable and they went to the shop. There was a stniggle, but the man was eventually handcuffed. Accused was the man. Constable Hendren said that when lie went into the shop, he first saw the man behind the counter. Then he went into a back room. Accused had a baghook with him and tried to strike witness. He closed with accused and after a struggle the man was handcuffed. The point of the bag-hook was broken pff and was found in the door-way. The padlock hasp on the door bore marks which presumably had been made with the bag-h00k.,„ .
Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court' for trial on the breaking and entering charge. On the charge of stealing the wine he is to be dealt with summarily. Bail of £100 was allowed, accused to report weekly to the police.
