ARSON CHARGE.
TAXI DRIVER'S ARREST. DOMINION ROAD FIRE. WEEK'S REMAND GRANTED. MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL. Following an outbreak of fire in a Dominion Road draper's shop early last Sunday morning, inquiries were made by detectives. Last night Detectives Power and Whitehead arrested John Lewis Gunning, aged 41, a taxi driver, on a charge of wilfully setting fire to clothing, so situated that he knew the shop of William Scott Miller, 557, Dominion Road, was likely to catch fire. Gunning appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. Ms. J. J. Sullivan represented accused. Detective-Sergeant Kelly obtained a remand until March 26. Mr. Sullivan asked that accused be granted reasonable bail. _ "Gunning is not bailable as of right, said Detective-Sergeant Kelly. "I have been instructed to oppose the granting of bail.© , , ~ Mr. Hunt: It all depends what the circumstances are. Mr. Kelly: This marMr. Sullivan: I strongly object to anything t)elng said at this stage, as it may only prejudice my client. If anything is 'to be said, it can be stated in chambers. Mr. Hunt: Quite right. Bail is refused, but application can be made in chambers.
