GAOL SET ABLAZE. U.S. State Militia Quell Howling Mob of Convicts. £60,000 DAMAGE DONE._ (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 18. A message from Joliet (Illinois) states that within an hour after a howling mob of 1600 convicts had set fire to the interior of the new Statesville prison on Wednesday they ran riot. After a fight for upwards of an hour the State militiamen quelled the disturbances. Seven buildings were destroyed, with a loss of £00,000. Four convicts wer« wounded and three guards were beaten.
