ONEHUNGA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Onehuniga-Mamj'kaa Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr. D. H. Kirk-Jones presiding. State Advances. —The secretary, Mr. J-, Pilkington, furnished a return of the business done by the State Advances to Workers Department. The amount repaid since the inception of the office to March 31, 1930, was £5,120,270. In all, 371 securities had (been realised upon. The losses for the last two years on the realisation of securities amounted to £6452. Regional Planning. — The Onehunga Borough Council is to be asked fco advise the chamber of the nature of the replies received from the various local 'bodies with regard to the proposed formation of a regional planning committee. Exchange Pate. —It was resolved that local authorities calling for tenders in future should be required to introduce a clause allowing a variation of price from that mentioned in the tender to cover vagaries of exchange, also to urge Parliament to pass legislation permitting local authorities to do this. Lecture—The president announced that Mr. M. H. Wynyard had consented to address the chamber on the present activities of the Main Highways Board and its future policy. Farmers' Finance. —The chamber agreed to support the scheme advocated by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce for assisting farmers with restricted credit to continue in possession and to refer the -matter to the Government for favour* able consideration.

The Chamber of Commerce met last evening, Mr. W. A. Pavitt presiding. Women's. Willis and McEntee was set up to go into the question and report to the next meeting. Conference.—The Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce advised that the half yearly meeting of the Franklin Associated Chambers of Commerce would be held at Pukekohe on May 13. The chamber appointed the president, tlie secretary, Mr. G. F. McDonald, and Mr. A. Willis as delegates. The following remits will be submitted to the conference:—(l) That the conference deplores the uneconomical expenditure as evidenced by certain relief schemes and suggests that future expenditure on the part of the Unemployment Board be more in the direction of assisting producers than in allocating funds to local bodies for public works; (2) That the conference deplores the action of the banks in increasing the charge for keeping of accounts by 100 per cent and that the Associated Banks be urged .to increase the radius within which exchange on cheques is charged to within 20 miles of the four principal centres; (3) That the farming community be urged to reciprocate the treatment afforded them by the Government by using the railways at every possible opportunity; (4) The conference objects to the 100 per cent increase m postage duties. ~ , Excessive Speed.—The chamber decided to write to the Papakura Town Board drawing its attention to the excessive speed of motor traffic through Papakura township.
