WEST COAST ROADS.
I see by Thursday's "Star" that attention has been drawn to the state of some of the West Coast roads. The road approaching Huia was not mentioned, or the "road" from Huia to Whatipu, a distance of four miles. Recently a friend and I travelled on a motor cycle to Karekare, down the four miles of beach to Whatipu, thence over the four-mile track now rather overgrown hi places and broken away, to Huia and back to Auckland, and in the course of the trip we were astonished at the beauty of the scenery and were very Much struck by the fact that, if properly formed all through, it would make one of the finest scenic drives in the country. Although the West Coast is but 30 miles from Auckland City, there are, I am sure, a great number of people who either do not know of its great beauty ® r are unable to obtain access to it due to the bad roads, or rather lack of r6ads. I am certain that if opened up the drive would be extremely popular. Tao beach from Whatipu to Karekare is Wl de and iron hard, and its approaches ar ®' not difficult. This scheme • would provide a number of the unemployed ■frith work and help to advertise the country. E.T.F.
