"SERIOUS FLAW."
WCRK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
OPERATION OF SCHEME 5
DEPUTATION TO COMMITTEE.
A serious flaw in the No. 5 unemployment scheme was pointed out this morning to the Unemployment Committee by a deputation consisting of men out of work. The deputation stated that married men with two or more dependents were supposed to <ret four days wouk a week, that is 10 days a month. As the scheme was operating every third week, the numbers of days' employment was one and a half. In the next fortnight they would be working three days and a half all told, and they would receive no pay until the end of that period. For two weeks they would receive £2 12/6 instead of £2 10/ for one week. If four days a week were worked the wages would be £11 4/ a month. This month the return was £8 4/6. "It is only the City Council jobs which are affected," said one member of the deputation. "Those men employed by the Transport Board are getting their four days regularly. What we want is for married' men to work four days aweek and the single men to work the balance."' Another member of the deputation said that every man employed under the scheme had paid 7/6 in unemployment levy and had helped to make work available. If they did not get work they could not pay the next unemployment levy, which was due on Monday. The matters brought up by the deputation were referred to Mr. T. Bloodworth, and a promise was given that immediate investigation of the position would be made.
