WAITEMATA COUNTY.

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

WORK

IMPROVED ROAD TO MANLY,

Mr. W. A. Bishop presided at the monthly meeting of the Waitemata County Council. The treasurer reported that approximately 40 per cent of the rates and arrears had 'been collected. It was expected tnat the council would ! be in a sound financial position at the end of March. The chairman reported that he had opened a subscription list for the Hawke s Bay relief fund, and copies had been sent to the post offices in the county. ihe cliief postmaster had written stating that his Department had already arranged to receive contributions at his money order offices, and it was considered that any contributions paid in at the post offices should be accounted for through this channel. The council voted £100 to the fund, and Mr. Glasgow handed in, on behalf of the Taupaki ratepayers, the. sum of £15 15/ and Mr. Paltridge the sum of £2 21. The engineer reported that the concreting of the Titirangi Main Highway had been commenced and 20 chains had been laid. The metalling of the Huia Road was well in hand. Opanuku Road, Henderson, was being metalled. It was proposed to employ relief workers on the repairing of the Hobsonville Main Road. He recommended that the tender _of Messrs. McCarten Bros., of £818 15/,: for Brigham's Creek bridge be accepted. South Head Road was under construction by relief workers and the completion of the metalling of Silverdale-Whangaparaoa Roacl was 'being finalised. That will provide an all-weather road to Manly. The bituminising of the BirkenheadAlbany'main highway was well in hand and arrangements were being made to put a large gang of men on the TaknpunaSilverdale main highway, which was dn a bad state. Application has 'been made to take advantage of the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme for work in the Ivaipara River, but the engineer reported that there was very little unemployment in the Helensville district, and owing to lack oi finance the 'board would not be able to accommodate men from the city on the work. It would appear that nothing can be done under the scheme to relieve the flooding of the area. Mr. Phillips stated that he was able to find one man only in his district ready to undertake work of this nature. The engineer reported that he had been able to find employment for 250 men under scheme No. 5, the majority of whom were local men. It was hoped to increase the number if arrangements could be made to transport the men from the city on to the works in hand. Difficulty in disposing of debentures at 534 per cent was mentioned by the treasurer, and it was stated that work on the Kaukapakapa-Wainui main highway would have to be suspended at the end of the month if money were not forthcoming.
