BALDWIN'S WAR MINISTER.

The death occurred on Friday night of Sir Laming Worthington-Evans, who was Minister of War in Mr, Stanley Baldwin's last Cabinet. He passed away in his sleep. ~ Sir Laming caught a severe cold on Thursday, but bis illness- was not considered serious and bis death has come as a severe shock. The King and Queen sent a message of sympathy to Lady Worthington-Evans. Sir Laming Worthington-Evans adopted the law as his profession. He entered Parliament in 1910 as a Conservative and soon cained prominence by his criticism o UrnW George Nationa — scheme. Yet it was Lloyd George wlio appointed him Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Munitions in 1916-when be receivea a baronetcy—after he had acted successively as Inspector of Administrative Services and Controller of the Foreign Trade Department of the Foreign Office. He left the Ministry of Munitions in 1918 to become Minister of Blockade. In 1910 he was Minister of Pension, in 1920 Minister without portfolio, and in 1921-22 Minister of War in the Coalition Cabinet. His refusal _to join issue with the Carlton House section of the party kept him out of office till 1923, when he was made PostmasterGeneral. From February to November, 1924, he was editor of the "Financial News." Then in the second Baldwin Cabinet he became once more Minister of War. Sir Laming took a prominent part in House of Commons debates when the Tory party became the official Opposition, and no later than last Wednesday he launched a vote of censure motion on the Labour Government for its continued increase of public expenditure.
