MOTORIST KILLED.
ENGINE STAIXED ON CROSSING- ? MOTHER THROWS CHILD CLEAR, J \ (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.). OAMARU, Thursday. A six-seater touring car collided with the engine of a slow train from Oamarii to-day at a crossing near the Mahend - railway station. The driver of the car* Mr. Edward Knewstubb, a dockmaster at Port Chalmers, received injuries front which he died at Oamaru Hospital oiwJ hour later. Other occupants of the car were Mrs# Knewstubb, Mr. R, Turney and his wifd and two children. The two women werd also admitted to the- hospital with serious injuries, and Mrs. Knewstubfr was reported to be in a critical eonditioii this evening. The crossing is not regarded as dangerous. It is thought that the engine of the car stalled when the car was on tho rails, and the driver was apparentlyunable to start the engine before t~<J collision occurred. The car was?wrecked, Mrs. Turney, seeing that a collision was inevitable, showed great 'presence of mind and threw the youngest child out of the car, doubtless saving its life, as the child was sitting next to Mr. Knew* stubb.
