DEVONPORT PROPERTY-HOLDERS.

In the '"Star" of the loth instant appears an effusion signed by "Propertyholder." In taking a cursory glance at the figures supplied by the treasurer of the Devonport Property-holders' Association, I have no reason to dispute the stated numerical strength of its membership. I would point out that the membership of the association includes the wife also, and therefore the membership stands at 2000, which all will admit is a very healthy membership, and one the association is proud of. The association directs its influence in the direction of a more economic administration. It will not be denied that the ratepayers are bearing a tremendous burden by way of rates, and as there are marked evidences of the rates being increased it is the aim of the association to prevent further increases and work within the compass of revenue, and afc the same time conserve greater interest to those people who live in subsidiary streets. "Property-holder" attempts to repudiate the statement regarding the association membership, but the answer to that will be supplied at the ballot box. The statement that Mr. McLean was a member of '.he council at the time the £6000 was raised for the unreliable meters is not correct. The concluding sentence of thf letter in question, "The incident should impress on the citizens the absolute necessity of electing only competent and intelligent men to the borough," exactly fits tho aspirations of the association.
