MISS JEAN BEGG.

' APPOINTMENT IN INDIA. Miss Jean Begg, who lias been associate general secretary of the Auckland Y.W.C.A. for live years, has accepted an appointment to the national staff of the Y.W.C.A. of India, Burma and Ceylon. Miss Begg's work in Auckland has been distinguished by deep insight, by devotion to duty and by avoidance of the limelight, and it is certain that it will go on bearing fruit. Miss Bcgg lias always taken a keen interest in all things appertaining to women. She recently returned from Honolulu, where she went as chief of the New Zealand delegation to the PanPacifie Women's Conference. There she was appointed international director of the social service section, which placed her."on the executive that controls the conferences. She is a member of the recently-formed, Mental-Defectives Board which was set up after the passing of the Mental Defectives Act. She and Mrs. Peter Fraeer, of Wellington, arc ■the only women on the board.. She is also a justice of the peace. While in America, Miss Begg was specially • trained at the New York School for Social Work, which is affiliated with Columbia University. Here she underwent a special- training in women police work, and work among what are spoken of as "problem girle." Previously she was in American Samoa, where she taught a school. She gained a teaching qualification at the Dnnedin Training College. ■ At a special meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board", Miss Begg's resignation was accepted with regret. It will take effect at the end of March, and she will leave during the month of April for India.
