DROPPED CATCHES

SECOND TEST DRAWN.! I

England's Stubborn Defence to African Attack.

TAYLOR'S 2000 RUNS.

(United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10.30 a.m.) - CAPETOWN, January 5. Hopes at South Africa snatching a victory in the second Test faded away as England's opening batsmen, with the obvious policy of safety first, offered a most stubborn front, wiping i off the arrears on the first innings : with the loss of three wickets. I Hammond was again outstanding, dis- 1 playing extreme caution and successfully wearing down the attack. Hendren, how- 1 ever, batted with characteristic brightness. The howlers tried every device to lure Hammond, Hendren, and Leyland into traps, and at one stage there were six men on the boundary for the slow bowlers, but the batsmen, realising their great responsibility, turned down the opportunities to liven up the play. When England was leading by 50 runs there was a sensational episode. Catterall secured the wickets of White, Chapman and Peebles rapidly at a low cost, but Hendren hung on grimly, and with only half an hour left a draw became inevitable. - x South Africa marred its chances of victory by dropping two vital catches, namely, Wyatt when he- was nine, and Hendren when 11. Nevertheless the match is regarded as an auspicious start for the local men, as this was the first turf wicket Test played here. Taylor, in this match, reached 2000 runs in Test cricket. REPLY TO CRITICS.

Chapman's Opinion ■ of South African Batsmen. "VETERANS'" PINE FIELDING. (Received" 11.30 fepi-) CAPETOWN, January 5. A. P. F. Chapman, when asked his opinion-of the criticisms'- 5 of the English team published in England over the week-end, voiced the sentiment of the whole team that the uninformed criticisms were made by people 6000 miles away who could not possibly know the conditions. Chapman, pointed out that it was acknowledged that the English team's fielding throughout two trying days in the heat had been excellent, yet they were called veterans. Furthermore, the critics overlooked the "Africans' damn fine batting."
