SEINE NETTING.

It is, precisely this assertion of Mr. Deighton about our Selling methods which I wish, the public of New Zealand to sit up and listen; to. He calls our seine nets up to date. They are not —they are deadly, they are easy, they are efficient, they catch fish galore, and if a fishery was an inexhaustible supply the seine nets would do. But here is where Mr. Deighton shows his ignorance; they are out of date. Professor Prince, Professor Quinn and all other authorities condemn them. In the foremost fishing countries of the world in their own waters they are now forbidden. Qf course they cannot be forbidden as yet in international waters, but Denmark is making efforts to get the limits extended and has told the world that by our greed we are going to have a serious shortage. This is up to date, and New Zealand 'methods are out of date. Whether I know something or nothing of fisheries is a matter of which Mr. Deighton could give no opinion, because his knowledge of fisheries has nothing to do with a knowledge of fishing. You might as well say a firm cutting down forests has a knowledge of forestry. .It is our business to protect our forests against timber millers, and it is equally our business to protect our fisheries against exploitation by fishermen. Mr. Deighton dare not take up my challenge, so he merely triesto discredit what I say in the interests of bis union. The fine union I represent consists of Nordic men, Britishers, men who would save New Zealand fisheries in pure patriotism. The very last people to trust to cut down our forests as they like would be the timber millers, and the last people to .trust with the fisheries would be the fishermen. The very serious part of all this is our Civil Service, which has the matter in hand. Does not this service require a thorough overhaul? RUBY E. WATSON. .
