FRAUD ALLEGED.

SEQUEL TO ENTERTAINMENT. NAPIER, Monday. Complaints received by the police regarding an entertainment presented in the Napier Municipal Theatre on Saturday night led to the arrest early this morning of Franklin John Smith, aged 33, on a charge of false pretences. Smith appeared before a justice of the peace in the Police Court later in the morning 011 the following charge: — "That on January 3, at Napier, with intent to defraud, he obtained fiom William Neilson the sum of nine shillings by means of a certain false pretence, to wit, by falsely representing that he was a master magician known as 'Carter the Great.'" Stating that further similar charges would be brought against Smith, Detec-tive-Sergeant Fitzgibbon. who prosecuted, applied for a remand until January 12. This > was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £100 in self, together with two sureties of £50 each.
