BROKE NECK AND LIVED.

CHRISTCHURCK JOCKEY. DISCHARGE FROM HOSPITAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRIST CHURCH, this day, The well-known Christchurch jockey, Ernest Shaw, who broke his neck when he fell from Pangolin in the November racing carnival last year, was discharged from the Lewisham Hospital yesterday. He is wonderfully well considering all he has suffered. Shaw suffered a fracture of the iirst vertebra. Fortunately there was no displacement of the bone and no pressure on the spinal cord, otherwise he would not ha% e j lived. . j The spill that Shaw had was his second serious one, for in Auckland he had a fall, also from Pangolin It is considered that he will not be able to ride again for a long time, if at. all. Shaw's case is somewhat similar to that of J. Turpin, the former wellknown Linwoocl Rugby footballer, who was admitted to hospital about three years ago suffering from a dislocated neck. To-day Turpin is back at work fit and well. Turpin's case was more serious than Shaw's, for he suffered a dislocation. Ther.e have been several cases or fractures of the spinal column in Christchurch in the past seven or eight months, and the sufferers have been saved.
