TAIJPO BATHING ACCIDENT

DROWNING NARROWLY AVERTED.

(From Our Own Correspondent.} TAUPO, Saturday. The people of Taupo are still talking of the' accident in the Waikato River on Thursday, when a girl so nearly lost her life. Miss Lowe, of Mokai, was bathing at the confluence of the Wairakei hot creek and the Waikato River. She got in difficulties and screamed for help.. Miss A. Glover, of Grey Lynn, sprang _in fully dressed and reached thg drowning girl, told her ,how to. keep afloat and assisted her until they Ave re washed apart.' Miss Glover managed to reach the opposite bank, nearly exhausted. The.girl's father also jumped in, reached hjs daughter, and was also separated from .her by the eddies. He managed,to get back and the girl bravely obeyed instructions and kept herself afloat, but still remained in the middle erf a, fairly strong current, with eddies. Mr. G. G. Potts, of the Taupo Internal Affairs Department, heard the cries, hastened to the spot, and also jumped in, but was unable, to reach; Miss Lowe.' Finally, after being carried nearly a mile and a half, Miss Lowe was washed ashore by an eddy to the opposite, bank. Both she and Miss Glover were now on the wrong' side of the river, with no road, but Mr. D. Hunt, of Taupo arrived with his motor boat, and took them across. Miss Glover seemed the most exhausted, and had to receive attention at the Wairakei Hotel. When the accident happened, word was sent to. : .tlie hotel .for swimmers to come to the rescue. Six of them left in a car, and in their hurry to- be useful the car turned upside down, with all the passengers underneath. Fortunately it had a steel body,, and withstood the shock, and they were all got out uninjured, but too late, to take pait in the ■ Glover's action was loudly praised and those who saw it.intend to represent the matter to the Royal Humane Society. - . •. • ■
