(United P.A.-Electric Telegraph-Copyright)
(Received 10.30 a.m.) PARIS, December 30.
It is revealed that Marshal Joffre, in his grave illness caused by .arthritis, was given only a local anaesthetic and that he watched the amputation of his leg without showing the slightest emotion.
The latest bulletin states that he retains consciousness has taken a little nourishment. He bore unfatigued the dressing of the wound.
M. Briand, the French Foreign Secretary, on leaving the nursing home, said slowly and emotionally': "The Marshal has remained as he always was during the war, admirable in; resistance and courage."
The doctors in attendance: express the opinion that Marshal Joffre is making a fight for life such as is rare in medical annals.
