OVER THE BANK.
PARTY OF FIVE MAORIS,
ACCIDENT IN DECREPIT CAR,
NARROW ESCAPES FROM DEATH,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
TAIHAPE, this day,
About 6 o'clock on Tuesday evening a decrepit Ford car, purchased by its present owner for £2, and containing five Maori members of a shearing gang, inclusive of a' Maori woman* all bound for a swim after the day's shearing, left the road near Moawhango, when travelling at pace round a corner.
It appears that the play in the steering gear did not give the driver the desired control when he was proceeding at any speed, and t'he off wheels went over the edge. ■ The result was that the machine turned three complete somersaults, and threw the occupants right and left before coming to rest in a creek bed.
By a miracle no one was killed, and Mr. Harry Chase, who was driving a lorry behind, brought all five into the Taihape Public Hospital. The injuries received by the party were:— Amelia Hawria, injuries to head and broken ribs. ' Jack Davis, compound fracture of leg. Tuto Hawria, knee and wrist injuries. The other two men, after receiving attention to minor cuts and bruises, were able to return home.
