WORK TO BE RATIONED
POSITION AT WHAKATANE
{By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Wednesday. A proposal to ration work was discussed at the last meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. ' It was suggested by the Works Committee that outside employees should be paid 2/ an hour for a 44-hour week, and that the ray of teamsters be reduced to that of twohorse drivers. ■V*t,' The Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, said the foreman had suggested this course to enable more men to be employed without extra cost to the council. The teamsters' wages were within a few shillings of the foreman's wages, while the wages of the administrative staff were too low owing to the/past unsatisfactory state of the borough finances. The road staff had been paid above the award rate. He considered the Works Committee's report was a wise one. I The committee's recommendation was ! adopted.
