UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.
PLEA FOR SINGLE MEN. REPRESENTATIONS BY MR. LEE MARTIN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Wednesday. Recently Mr. W. Lee Martin, M.P., made representations to the Government for work for 12 single men dismissed from the Glen Massey colliery. - The Minister of Public Works the Hon. W. B. Taverner, has replied stating that although only a limited number of single men had been provided with employment on Government relief works, the Government had been severely' criticised in newspapers recently for employing single men on relief works.
The Minister thought it would be im-; politic to make special provision for the 12 single men at Glen Massey, especially as there were hundreds of married men, in'the Auckland Province who had been out of employment 'for months.
The Minister added that he had issued instructions that relief work on the Ngaruawahia-Waingaro Road was to be brought up to strength by the employment of married men, who were to be selected by the Labour Department. .
