SEA BATHING A CENTURY AGO.
In an old holiday guide-book there, is an amusing description of the, early morning scene at Brighton a century ago: "Each man runs z o a machine tis it is drawn out of the water, and scuffles to set foot thereon. Some send their footmen and contend by.proxy; others go in boats or on horseback to meet the machines; so that a tolerably modest man has generally some hours of contemplation on the sand, to the detriment of his shoes and his temper." Impatient folk, who bathed from the beach without a machine were fined £5 5/ for each offence.
