CHILDREN'S GIFT.

Explorer's Dying Request Fulfilled. ECHO OF SCOTTS POLAR DASH. (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, October 6. The purpose of a fund started in Brisbane in 1911 for Peter Scott, the onlychild of Captain Scott, the Antarctic hero, to which the subscribers were mostly school children, was fulfilled to-day. The money was acknowledged by the "Brisbane Courier" and had been invested in endowme: policies, maturing at Peter's majority which occurs this week. Mr. Macartney presented Peter with between £500 and £600 in the presence of Captain Scott's widow, now Lady Hilton Young, Sir R. Hilton Young, Lady Ellison and two of Scott's other sisters. Peter feelingly acknowledged the gift. He is a Cambridge student with artistic leanings, taking after his mother, who is a .celebrated sculptor. The tragedy of Captain Scott's last attempt to reach the South Pole forms an epoch in Antarctic exploration. Starting on the trek in October, it was January before be and his colleagues arrived at their goal, only to find that the Norwegians, under Captain Eoald Amundsen, had been there a month earlier. After Captain Scott's death the Antarctic committee, which had managed his affairs in England, translated into action bis last appeal to the nation, to provide for the dependents of those lost. Several funds were raieed and supplemented by a Treasury grant for the dependents of those who had lost their lives in the service of their country, and in the pursuit of knowledge. Scott himself left a son of one year, whom he begged the world to start on his way in life, making a man and an English gentleman of him.
