APPOINTMENT of justices, ASSURANCE OF MINISTER. (jjy Telegraph— Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. An assurance that political colour . did not influence the appointments of Justices of the Peace was given by the • Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Justice, m the House to-day when replying to suggestions by Reform baclc-bencheis. ? The Minister said that justices were recommended -by the local member of Parliament, and there was no distinction as between the political parties, provided the nominee had had a reasonable education and was an honest, upright man. What his political creed was did not matter. \ _ _.. . ■: Mr. Cobbe said he agreed that in the mining districts where a large numbe. of men were employed, it was very important that some working j men should be appointed to the Commission 1 of 'the Peace. ... - ! In replying to requests that more Jusr ■ tices should be appointed, the Minister < said that at present there were nearly - GOOO Justices in the Dominion. It was not customary to make appointments during a session of Parliament, and it was his intention early in the recess to go into the whole question. Where it could be shown that additional appointments were necessary, particularly in scattered districts, these would be made.
