DEATHS FROM DROWNING.
IN EXCESS OF MOTOR TOLL. ; ; ' CLAIM FOR SUBSIDY. XBy 'Telegraph.—own. Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A strong protest against the Govern-ment-s decision to withdraw the annual grant of £150 for distribution among eight life saving centres was made at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Centre. The secretary reported having written to the Minister of Internal Affairs on the subject. He had pointed out that the number of lives lost each year at railway crossings was only about one-tenth of the number lost by drowning. Yet the Government spent every year several thousands of pounds towards reducing the risk of loss of life at railway crossings. The chairman, Dr. H. T. J. Thacker, said he would ask the Mayor to appeal to the Government to continue its subsidy. It was the Government's duty to see that every person in New Zealand, who was fit, was able to swim.
