THE WATER BILL.
Neither city nor suburban ratepayers can do otherwise than admire Mr. Potter for his efforts to secure the right of local bodies to secure their water supplies from whatever source it suits them, and to argue that they should be compelled to buy it at any price from the Auckland City Council is ridiculous. The City Council, ;by exploiting the suburban residents in the sale of water, has made a huge profit; so much so that it has been able to transfer £400,000 from the .water account to its general funds. It seems very parochial for Mr. Savage to become so heated in opposing the rights of suburban residents j to secure their water supplies from the cheapest sources, and it ill becomes this member of Parliament to prate about unemployment when he so vehemently opposes the right of suburban local bodies employing labour to secure a cheaper water supply. Mr. Stallworthy has himself, like Mr. Savage, been a former member of the City Council, but has shown by his speeches that as a member of Parliament his views are impartial. He heartily supports Mr. Munns in the endeavour to confer the right on suburban bodies to Secure a -water supply from whatever source they choose. HAROLD SCHMIDT.
