PLANTING ROOTS FOR SEED.
Many amateurs have a fancy for making selections of the best roots of onions, carrots, etc., for seed purposes. Only the very best and most true to type specimens should be planted. In most cases less than half a dozen will provide all the seed required for a large garden. Now is the time to plant them. Plant the full depth in the soil so as to give the plant good anchorage. A sunny and sheltered positionis advisable, and it will be necessary to stake the inflorescence as soon as it runs up to flower.
