HORSES AT TE AROHA.

SIR RUSSELL IN WORK. LOOKING VERY WELL. The running of Lady Vane in the Avondale Stakes was highly meritorious when the fact is taken into consideration that during her training barrier education was not possible, -while she did not have the advantage of having taken part in any juvenile parade. She may be expected to improve upon her Avondale effort and should prove a payable fori Mr. T. Yam, who at' least has commenced his racing operations with a highly promising juvenile. Mr. P. Woods is riding his Lapidary— Queen Street filly about the roads. She is furnishing splendidly and will be bigger than her half-brother, Valstreet. She is of an exceedingly docile nature and shows character. She will probably be among the track workers in a few weeks. A. E. Cox's team, Black Maire, Indolent and Miss Albyn, failed to get into the money at Avondale. Their first day's running improved them, but the heavy going on Monday was all against them. Black Maire showed that he has not lost his pace and is not yet a back number. Armenian was expected by many local sports to run well at Avondale, because her track work of late had been consistent, while on a heavy track her strength should pull her through. She was not seen under silk, however, but may be a competitor at Ellerslie next month. If the' Sandstar filly Star Lap in A. Cox's team continues to execute her track work as satisfactorily as she has this month she will probably be seen out under her trainer's colours at the Waikato meeting in November. Mr. Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge, has purchased from Mr. James McNicol, of the Wairakau Estate, Glen Maire, by Glen Albyn. Te Arolia is to .be represented at the Auckland spring meeting by Lady Vane, Honiton, Taumai, Volimond and Armenia. Trainers of the majority of horses here are awaiting the Hunt Club meeting at Cambridge on Labour Day. • It is probable that the well-known trainer S. Hodge will commence training operations at Te Aroha before the racing season has much further advanced. Boxes and paddock accommodation are available just now and the grass track and ploug'li will afford trainers every opportunity of getting horses fit. - It. is an established fact that it is a very rare occurrence to find a horse in training here either sore or lame. Another advantage, often availed of by mentors, is that of hill work on the lower slopes of the: mountain. ; s , \

Sir Russell has again joined the ranks of track workers. The Arcliiestown gelding is looking exceptionally well after his few weeks' respite from work. Hangawera is at present one of Trainer M. L. Lipsey's team. He is a qualified hunter, but during the season inay contest hurdle events. Master Latour is fining down nicely , and will soon be in nice trim for spring | racing. lie is up to weight, and if well placed should in due course be equal to increase liis winning score. On the plough track on Thursday serviceable work was executed by the Lucullus—Miss Floss gelding. Town Bird Russell, Master Latour, Antique, Marble Arch—Amans Queen gelding. Glenison and Star Lap were trotted twice round and sprinted home a couple of furlongs. The latter showed to distinct advantage, and tliis Sandstar gelding bids fair to be a payable proposition.
