AN ENGLISH COLT.

LORD BUCHAN PLEASES. MR. J. M. SAMSON'S PURCHASE GALA DAY AGAIN DISAPPOINTS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHEISTCHURCH, Friday. One of Mr. J. M. Samson's English purchases was on view at the Orari course on Thursday, and with A. E. Ellis on his back ho was given a run down the straight when the candidates for the Geraldino Cup were doing their preliminaries. He is a black colt named Lord Buchan, by Buchan from Thracia, by Tracery, and despite his size he shows a lot of quality, while he has an attractive style of galloping. Ho ranks as a three-year-old in the Dominion, but being at a disadvantage in age it is unlikely that he will be seriously tried out for some time. Bred at the Sledmere Stud by Lacly Sykes, Lord Buchan cost 3SO guineas as a yearling. Two years earlier a Captain Cuttle filly from the same mare realised 5100 guineas, but she was not raced. Gala Day, who ran' another disappointing race in the hurdle event at Geraldine on Thursday, was allowed to forfeit his second day engagement. His recent form has been very disappointing, and his owner-trainer, K. W. King, is not likely to persevere with him much longer. A two-year-old by Arrowsmith from Chukka has joined his brother Eanelagh in A. E. Wormald's stable. This trainer has done well with Eanelagh, who is likely to show further improvement during the present season. The three-year-old filly Tray Bond shows great speed, biit this is only what might be expected from a'study of her breeding. Her tire Tea Tray is by the Tetrarch, and lie endows most of his progeny with pace, while her dam Victory Bond, by -'aper Money, was exceptionally brilliant, though she could not go far. Tray Bond appears to have inherited the characteristics of her dam, five furlongs being far enough for her at present. Her stamina may improve, and she may run out six furlongs well later in the season. High Court, who was purchased in Hawke's Bay recently for the Otago owner, Mr. C. A. Shicl, made his South Island, debut in the Geraldine Cup. He showed up all right for about six furlongs and then gradually faded out. He heed not be judged on this performance as he is backward. A few weeks will make a big difference in his preparation, and he should be ready to show good form by the time the New Zealand Cup carnival lias to be considered. Some fbalings are reported from Mr. G. A. Kain's South Canterbury stud. The Bezonian mare Satisfaction, dam of Eeceipt, Battle Colours and Satisfy, has a colt to Night Eaid, and the Solferino mare, Moiselle, dam of Night Lad and Golden Sceptre, a filly to the same sire. Bonnie Waif, by Boniform from Snow Waif, produced twins to Eosenor. One of the foals died, but the other, a colt, is a healthy youngster, though he is small.
